Description

This course aims to give students a practical introduction to some basic techniques and principles involved in sight translation. Students will be encouraged to identify and extrapolate key concepts in the source text, focusing on meaning rather than individual items of lexis. To this end, the objective is not a word-for-word translation of the text but a plausible rendering that contains all the key concepts and that accurately reflects the register of the source text. Students will read for gist, swiftly analysing the text and identifying main points and potential problem areas. Where necessary, students will be encouraged to reformulate and paraphrase. The texts used in class will be taken from a range of settings, including topics ranging from climate change to social media.
