Description
The course provides English language training and development at B1/ B1+ Intermediate level of the CEFR in all 4 skills: Reading (Comprehension), Listening, Speaking, Writing, along with the consolidation of grammatical structures and general vocabulary building.
A graded text which includes authentic BBC videos is used in class and is designed to develop language on a range of topics along with 4 skills work with particular emphasis on speaking. The idea behind the preference for speaking is that it allows learners to practise the language they need to express themselves confidently in a real English-speaking environment. Across a range of speaking activities, students are encouraged to experiment with new language structures to develop and justify arguments and opinions, express feelings, relate personal experiences, speculate and hypothesise.
The course includes strategies to resolve any difficulties in pronunciation and develop fluency. Use of online resources which accompany the set text is encouraged for home study to further engage students in practising the English language.
Aims
The course is designed for students to achieve B1/B1+ Learning Outcomes across all 4 skills expressed in terms of Typical Abilities – what they Can Do – in real-life situations:

Assessment

Student assessment is based on the Assessment for learning approach (Afl), also known as Formative Assessment, which integrates teaching and learning. Continuous feedback (teacher to student and student to teacher) throughout the course is designed to optimise learning by monitoring progress and making informed decisions about how to achieve learning goals.
Writing and Speaking are assessed according to the CEFR scales:
Writing: Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation, Language
Speaking: Grammatical Resource, Lexical Resource, Discourse Management, Pronunciation, Interactive Communication.
End of First Semester Exam: 40% of Final Mark
1) 2 hours covering 2 units of of the set text SpeakOut, including exercises in 3 skills—Listening, Comprehension (Grammar), Writing.
2) 5 minute video presentation to assess Speaking skill, to be completed in 24 hours and submitted via email.
Final Exam:Â 60% of Final Mark
1) 2 hours consisting of exercises in 3 skills—Listening, Comprehension (Grammar), Writing
2) 5 minute video presentation to assess Speaking skill, to be completed in 24 hours and submitted via email.
